New York, 1954: From Jackson Pollock’s cover of LIFE to Bird Parker’s new kind of hot jazz called bebop, the city is buzzing with post-war effervescence. But amidst all of this excitement, a dark underbelly of criminality floods the streets. When a young immigrant woman is found strangled in a seedy hotel in Alphabet City, the wealthy and orphaned siblings Josephine (“Jo”) and Jack Bookstaver go beyond their professional duty with the NYPD to follow their instincts.
Jo, despite having to rely on crutches, embarks on what seems to be a wild goose chase across the city- from a grand gothic house on the shores of the Hudson to the Waldorf-Astoria, through Riker’s Island and a trailer park, ultimately uncovering terrible secrets about the victim’s family. It doesn’t end there, because Jo won’t let sleeping dogs lie. She convinces her brother to join her hunt for the girl’s murderer, unknowingly destabilizing a scheme far beyond anything they could imagine and placing herself next on the hit list.
